Rod Fry Race 2016

Please either have a paddle or volunteer – it takes lots of people to run events like this!

EVENT DETAILS:

Sunday, 3rd 2016.  Register now here.

Meet at Swan Canoe Club, Johnson Parade, Mosman Park, for this annual 10.5km race to Fremantle and return. There’s a short course of 3km for guppies and casuals as well. Cash prize $250 for the winners of the two most contested kayaking or ski classes. Other prizes from many sponsors as usual.

Race classes are: K1, K2, Ocean Skis OS1 & OS2, Spec Surf Skis, Plastics and Sundries & Recreational. Age groups are Guppy, Under 18, Open, 35+, 45+ and 55+. Female and Male. Classes and age groupings with insufficient entries will be combined with other related groupings.

K2 & OS2 – enter as a Team, then place your two paddler names in the “(Teams only) Member Names” field.

Note the “Recreational” class again this year – to encourage our non-competitive members to come and enjoy the day without feeling any pressure to win – paddle 3km. Special prizes in this class!

ON THE DAY:

Registration confirmation: 7:00am-8:00am SHARP (please confirm your Class and age group!)
Briefing: 8:30am
First grid away: 9:00am

Join in the socialising afterwards with a sausage sizzle. Cakes and light refreshments available as well as the raffle and handing out of spot prizes whilst results are being worked out.

NO late entries will be accepted on the day after 8:00am.

NAMING OF THE RACE:

The race is named after the late Rod Fry who was a long-time member of our Club and a keen and nationally successful C1 and C2 slalom paddler. He was sadly killed in a car accident whilst returning from a paddling holiday at Yallingup. There are photos of him at the Club.

Rob Fry Race 3rd April – please race (Register here) or be a volunteer

Our annual race to Fremantle and return on Sunday 3rd April– please get involved to help make it a big success.  Registration will open soon, and don’t forget we have a Recreational class again this year for casual paddlers – no first place but many prizes.

To volunteer for one of the 30 or so jobs it takes to run this race (registration, timing, spotting, safety, food etc), please email Lee at mailto:rodfryrace@swancanoeclub.org.au .

Juniors Shine at National Slalom Championships

Congratulations to the Swan juniors who did wonderfully well at the recent Nationals in Tasmania and the other selection race at Penrith:  Kira Wall, Alexandria Choate, Billie Knell and Louis Richardson have all been selected in the Australian junior team and will travel to Poland for the World Junior Championships in July.

Georgia Rankin is in the Under 23 National Team and will make her debut at some of the World Championships in Europe as part of the Australian Senior Team.

Demelza Wall was Champion Girl at the Australian Schools Championships in January.

Zlatan, our slalom coach, should take lots of the credit for this amazing outcome.

Mosman Park Fair – 20th March – volunteers

We are again promoting the Club at the local Fair next Sunday 12-5pm, and would appreciate members attending our stall for an hour to talk to the public – please call Peter if you can give some time: ph 0419 904 168.

Club room Hire

You are all encouraged to promote the club rooms as a venue for meetings and training sessions during weekdays when there is little member use. This will help to keep member fees lower. We have a great venue with views, a good audio visual system and can accommodate 100 people.

Canoe Trailer Available

We have a licensed trailer able to transport many boats when paddling at other locations, and members can borrow this at no cost.

Building Changes

We are slowly progressing the issues around getting a building license for the new balcony. This requires us to install a wheel chair lift for access to the first floor and this in turns requires the stairwell to be widened. We have quotes for this work and are seeking funding from a Federal Government grant and Lotteries West, with help from Rocky Bay who use the Club to provide activity for their clients with disabilities. We also plan to install ramps and decking outside the other roller doors to aid access and prevent further accidental falls.

Some Gripes

Non-members are not allowed to use Club boats. The Committee is aware and has questioned several people over the last few months about this issue.  If you have family or friends who wish to try paddling they are welcome to use your own boat while you paddle a Club boat.  Otherwise they should attend our Open Day ‘come and try’ or join the Club. The Club has insurance and liability for members only.

Doors left open too often

Please remember the rules for our many doors:

– Front door: if no one is in the foyer or just outside the door, then it must be closed.

– Roller doors: if no one is paddling within the immediate area of the ramp ( e.g. less than 50 m away, like the slalom group or a training course) then the rollers must be closed.

When leaving for a paddle it is best to be safe and close all the doors please.  Always remember to take your fob with you when paddling.

Boat Spaces

We aim for an active membership and leasing a boat space is a privilege of membership.  Members with boat spaces need to be regular paddlers. We monitor boat usage and reserve the right to move or remove boats which we feel are not being regularly used, since we are constantly in need of spaces for new and keen paddlers.

Dogs

You may have noticed that the Council has installed signs indicating that dogs are no longer permitted on the grass reserve between the Club and the restaurant and on the stairs. Dogs are of course not allowed inside our club rooms – a long standing rule.
